“At 6 AM on the Brothers Islands, 100km offshore with no other boats visible, you enter the water and descend to 30 metres. A hammerhead shark materialises from the blue, passes within 5 metres, and disappears. By 7 AM you are back on deck eating breakfast. This is why serious divers come to the Red Sea.”
The Red Sea liveaboard experience is entirely different from day dive operations. You sleep on the dive site. You are in the water at dawn before the day boats arrive. You dive remote reefs accessible only to liveaboard vessels. You dive 3-5 times per day. And you access dive sites that most divers β even experienced ones β never reach.
The Pure Coastal partners with the finest Red Sea liveaboard operators to arrange private or semi-private expeditions to the most legendary dive sites on earth.
The Red Sea’s Legendary Liveaboard Sites
The Brothers Islands (El Akhawein) β Two small islands rising from the deep sea 100km offshore. Big Brother and Little Brother host spectacular wall dives dropping to 800+ metres. Pelagic life: oceanic whitetip sharks, hammerheads, thresher sharks, grey reefs. Big Brother’s famous wreck β the Numidia (1901) β lies on the wall from 8-80 metres. See Marsa Alam as your liveaboard departure point.
Daedalus Reef β A remote circular reef with a lighthouse and year-round hammerhead sightings. The current brings big pelagics. The wall on the south side drops into darkness with enormous sea fans. One of Egypt’s most celebrated dives.
Elphinstone Reef β The most famous reef in the Egyptian Red Sea. An underwater plateau with two natural windows: the north plateau (hammerheads, oceanic whitetips) and south plateau (giant napoleons, schools of barracuda). The long canyon at depth is breathtaking.
Rocky Island & Zabargad β Egypt’s most remote dive sites, accessible only via extended liveaboard. Zebargad Island has fascinating geological formations above and extraordinary marine life below. Manta rays, whale sharks (seasonal), and some of the healthiest coral in the Red Sea.

Frequently Asked Questions
What diving certification do I need for a Red Sea liveaboard?
Minimum PADI Open Water certification for most liveaboards. Some advanced sites (Brothers, Daedalus) require Advanced Open Water and proof of logged dives. The Pure Coastal will advise based on your certification level.
How long is a typical Red Sea liveaboard trip?
Standard trips run 7 nights / 6 days. Short itineraries (3-4 nights) are available for the northern Red Sea. Extended itineraries (10-14 days) cover the south including Rocky Island and Zabargad.
Are there sharks in the Red Sea?
Yes, and that’s a major draw. Oceanic whitetip sharks, grey reef sharks, hammerheads, and thresher sharks are all present at the liveaboard sites. None are considered aggressive in normal circumstances. Whale sharks are seasonal visitors.
Can I do a private charter liveaboard?
Yes. The Pure Coastal can arrange semi-private or fully private liveaboard charters for groups of 6-20 divers. This gives you complete control over the itinerary, dive schedule, and on-board experience.
